A city park is an excellent place to spend an afternoon. The 11-acre Prospect Park in Redlands is perfect for picnics, photo shoots, and more. It also features outdoor seating for 400 people and hosts the annual Redlands Summer Theater Festival. Originally a working farm, the land was donated to the city by a co-founder of the city. In 1882, the land was used as a boarding house for construction workers and later became the city’s first hotel.
The park’s name reflects its history. The park was originally called the Prospect House, and was built on a former arboretum. In 1888, Mr. England died, but his estate was purchased by Fred A. Hill. Hill’s estate was a popular local figure, serving on the Redlands library board along with Alfred Smiley. The Hill heirs eventually donated the park to the city of Redlands.
In addition to the park’s many activities, the Carriage House at Prospect Park qualifies as a cultural landmark. As such, it was awarded the Redlands Area Historical Society’s Heritage Award for adaptive reuse. This award honors the efforts of the community, and the historic Carriage House has been a prime example. The Redlands Area Historical Society has a history of restoring historic properties, and Liz Beguelin rehabilitated the Carriage House at Prospect Park.
In addition to the beautiful landscape, the park is a great place to clear your mind. During the daytime, this is a very peaceful place to meditate. During the daytime, the park is quiet and relaxing, and there are many benches to sit at and enjoy the view. There are also many restaurants nearby, and visitors are encouraged to take their lunches here, though parking is sometimes a problem, especially on the weekends.
